Hair follicles are not continuously active and can enter different stages of rest and activity for reasons which are not completely known and which may occur several months after the events that triggered them. Hair follicles are generally round and straight, so that the hair that grows out of them is straight. Even before puberty there are short, straight, thin hairs in the pubic area. Hair follicles are one of he few organs or tissues of the human body that undergo cyclic degeneration and regeneration throughout the human lifetime. The cycle is not affected by season of the year-unlike the case with many animals that have seasonal changes in hair growth and color.

Hair follicles are extremely robust and capable of taking a lot of punishment. Despite the disruption by immune cells the hair follicles are capable of regeneration given the right conditions, even after many years of immune cell insult. Hair follicles are then said to be in a dystrophic anagen state. Examination of fallen hairs shows them having telogen roots.
